Sadly, about 1.8 million Albertans have experienced sexual abuse in their lifetimes. May is Sexual Violence Awareness Month. RWI Synthetics wants to help create awareness and lead the change from a culture of gender norms and stereotypes that permeate our society to one that is free of violence. The Alberta Council of Women's Shelters (ACWS) offers gender-based violence prevention training for schools, workplaces, and community organizations. You can learn more about these opportunities at https://lnkd.in/gZZFQUpE. We all have a role to play in putting an end to sexual violence while supporting survivors. #SVAM #LiftHerUP #RespectfulRelationships #CultureOfConsent #SurvivorSupport

Social planning meets Synthetic Populations! RWI Synthetics’ platform application for Youth Sense of Belonging in the Waterloo Region (Ontario, Canada) was selected as a poster presentation showcase at the Othering and Belonging Conference at the Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley in Oakland, CA, April 25th to 27th, 2024! Sense of Belonging is now recognized as an invaluable measure of youth sentiment, a critical insight for policymakers and other decisions in infrastructure, programming, and transportation in the future of their regions. The conference brought together reps worldwide who are invested in understanding and growing belonging in their communities. We were pleased and excited to represent the belonging work happening in the Waterloo region via the Children and Youth Planning Table of Waterloo Region. It was great to have Alison Pearson, a champion in Youth Belonging, Jim Moss and Serena McDiarmid of the Children and Youth Planning Table of Waterloo Region, and Debbie Engel at the poster session. RWI Synthetics generated the region and ran scenarios, including the impact of accessible programming and subsidized transit on Youth Sense of Belonging to connect investments to individual and community health, economics, and retention outcomes. A huge shout out to the Children and Youth Planning Table of Waterloo Region and the Grand River Transit team for championing the work on Youth Belonging in the Waterloo Region. This work led to intriguing insights from de-siloing decisions across multiple fields that converge to affect today’s youth and their ability to succeed and give back to the community! #Belonging #PosterSession #YouthBelonging #SyntheticPopulations #SenseOfBelonging

Cinco de Mayo, or May 5, has commemorated Mexican culture and heritage worldwide since 1863. In Mexico, it is a celebration of the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, marking independence from foreign rulers. Traditionally celebrated in Puebla, events include military parades and festivals. RWI Synthetics wishes all who celebrate a very happy Cinco de Mayo! #CincoDeMayo #Independence #History #Mexico #Victory

Since 2010, May 5th, or Red Dress Day, across North America has honoured the memories of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Almost 50% of the cases remain unsolved to this day. Originally started as an art installation project by Jaime Black (https://lnkd.in/eF6p-eg), a Métis multidisciplinary artist based in Winnipeg, The #REDressProject has become a grassroots movement across North America. Some Indigenous people believe that red is the only colour spirits see, so the red dresses symbolize a call to the spirits of missing and murdered women and girls back to their loved ones. Please join RWI Synthetics, a Certified Aboriginal Business (Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business), on this day in paying respect to the victims, raising awareness and appealing to the government to address the gendered and racialized violence perpetrated on Canadian Indigenous peoples. On Sunday, May 5th, 2024, a National Red Dress Day in Edmonton event will begin in Sir Winston Churchill Square at 8:00 am with a pipe ceremony. Participants are encouraged to wear red and meet at 10:00 am in the Square before walking to Beaver Hills House Park (10404 Jasper Avenue NW) at 11:00 am to honour missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, 2SLGBTQQIA people, and men. Take a moment to add your voice and thoughts to the movement to end violence against indigenous women and girls, and all women, by joining the Moose Hide Campaign, which provides many ways for you to say something. #MMIW #MMIWG2S #RedDressDay #Indigenous #Métis

Two years ago, RWI’s work was growing in the region, and we needed a home. We could spend every dollar we saved on our innovation, its reach, team expansion and community impact. In December of 2021, RWI Synthetics became the beneficiary of Tim Carwell and CommAlert’s #TheGoodWillProject, a gift of radical generosity that included a home in the prime real estate of the 11th floor at 101st Street and Jasper Avenue. This gift of space provided a vital presence for our local and international growth. Over the last two years, we have hosted federal government press conferences, clients and visitors from around the region and globe, along with our celebrations, team weeks, and impact hackathons. Without this gift, we wouldn’t be where we are today- pioneering the world’s first Regional Advanced Lab initiatives in the Edmonton Region, winning ASTech’s Innovation of the Year Award, and representing AI for good through applications in sustainable and resilient futures. In 2023, RWI was able to join CommAlert in paying it forward, supporting CommAlert’s #Reconciliation365 as one of the first funding partners. Through these heartfelt gestures, we extend our indigenous tradition of honour in giving and receiving. In receiving, we are reminded of our own giving and the role of this cycle in making us all better together. Tim Carwell and CommAlert’s #TheGoodWillProject, we are truly thankful. RWI Synthetics has now moved to a new home in Energy Square! We can’t thank Tim and the Good Will Project enough for being the most extraordinary difference makers. We will not rest until we can match this “pay-it-forward” generosity and impact that amplifies success in our community! #YegBiz #DowntownYeg #OfficeSpace #ThankYou #TheGoodWillProject

May is Asian Heritage Month, which encourages us to learn about people of Asian descent who have immigrated to Canada since the late 1700s. The Government of Canada officially signed the declaration announcing Asian Heritage Month in 2002, but it has been celebrated here since the 1990s. In the 2021 census, nearly 20% of Canada’s population reported having Asian origins. Asian Canadian cultures include East, South East, South, Western, and Central Asia, with a rich cultural heritage including many languages, ethnicities, and religious traditions. Now is the time to learn more about their diverse cultures and history in Canadian communities. Diversity is our strength! #AHM2024 #Culture #Origins #AsianHeritage #Diversity

Powerful speakers sharing their personal stories and professional observations were the hallmark of a United Way of the Alberta Capital Region event on April 18, 2024. RWI Synthetics’ COO, Katelyn Petersen, and Executive and Team Success Manager, Krista Davis, attended United Way Women United #MindFULL: A Candid Conversation on Women’s Mental Health. The sold-out event focused on the real issues for women - barriers to women’s well-being, how they can lift each other and what they can do to create a lasting impact—the evening also provided an opportunity to learn about the United Way’s Women United initiative to positively impact local women and girls by giving them access to opportunities, programs, and services. One such program is Empower U, a financial empowerment initiative. Beginning late last year, RWI Synthetics ran a Workplace Campaign for the United Way of the Alberta Capital Region for “Empower U,” a financial empowerment initiative geared towards low-income women and the “Impact of Free Period Products,” to alleviate period poverty in our communities. #Women #MentalHealth #Speakers #Barriers #WellBeing Edmonton Global Health Cities Edmonton International Airport (YEG) Explore Edmonton Corporation Edmonton Unlimited MacEwan University NorQuest College Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board City of Beaumont Parkland County City of St. Albert City of Spruce Grove Sturgeon County City of Edmonton

Celebrate International Girls in ICT Day with RWI Synthetics on April 25th and help create a global environment encouraging girls and women to thrive in information and communication technology careers. This day has been observed annually on the fourth Thursday of April since 2014. The 2024 theme is "Leadership" to highlight the importance of women role models for girls and young women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers. The ICT sector needs women's representation in all roles, as technology plays a role in the future of our planet and its people. Unfortunately, women have been underrepresented and underestimated in software development, engineering, technology research, academia, and high-level policymaking. RWI Synthetics encourages businesses and organizations to close the gender gap by inspiring and promoting the next generation of women leaders in STEM careers. #GIrlsInICT #Leadership #STEM #FemaleRoleModels #ICTSector
